History of the Festival
There have been six full-scale events in the history of the White Nights
of St. Petersburg International Music Festival. These events changed people's perceptions of the Russian entertainment industry at the end of the 20th century, and continue to astonish the world in the 21st century.
The first White Nights Festival was held in 1992 and was registered with the
International Federation of Festival Organizations (FIDOF), which was founded in Yugoslavia in 1966.
White Nights soon became the largest pop festival not only in Russia but throughout Eastern Europe. Festival events are covered by major Russian and international television and radio stations.
Further festivals took place in 1993, 1994, and 1995. During this period, the festival was headed by former Mayor of St. Petersburg Anatoly Sobchak.
In 2003, the festival's Organizing Committee put on a large-scale gala concert to celebrate the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg, and then again in 2006 as part of the cultural programme of the G8 Summit.
In 2011, the festival recaptured its former glory, gaining international renown.
The White Nights festival has treated Russian audiences to performances by many of the world's top stars, including:
Army of Lovers, Ringo Starr & His All Starr Band, Asia, Blood, Boney M, Brian May (Queen), Chris Rea, Deep Purple, Europe, Falco, Tanita Tikaram, Glenn Hughes, Sheryl Crow, Jethro Tull, Sweet, Joe Cocker, Jose Carreras, Jose Feliciano, Julio Iglesias, Londonbeat, Mark Farner, Mr. Big, Rick Wakeman, a-hа, Ricky Martin, Ronnie James Dio, Salt-n-Pepa, Samantha Fox, Scorpions, Slade, Status Quo, Steve Vai, Supermax, Sweet Tears, Technotronic, Terence Trent D'Arby, UFO, Vanilla Ice, Whitesnake's David Coverdale, and many others.
Representatives from the Dutch, British and Monaco royal families have all been guests of honour at the White Nights of St. Petersburg International Music Festival, along with the French Minister of Culture, the mayors of St. Petersburg's twin cities, and international media representatives, including journalists from Billboard, Hollywood Reporter, and Music & Media magazines.
To promote cultural exchange between Russia and the rest of the world
- To strengthen St. Petersburg's reputation as a world centre for culture and the arts
- To create a festive atmosphere for local residents and visitors to the city, through hosting a major event featuring international stars
- To improve the image of Russia as a whole, and St. Petersburg in particular
Throughout its 300-year history, St. Petersburg has remained
one of the world's most beautiful and culturally significant
cities. Its location, rich history, and architecture occupy an important place in international cultural heritage.
That is why it was here and only here that it was possible to
come up with and execute such an ambitious project.
5th White Nights of St. Petersburg International Music Festival
The festival continued to impress visitors in the new millennium. The 5th White Nights of St. Petersburg International Music Festival was held on 7, 8, and 9 July 2011 in St. Petersburg's Ice Palace.
The Festival included the following events:
An international song competition, judged by a respected jury
(Thomas Anders, Liz Mitchell, Dmitry Zakon, Dragan Nikitovic, Marco Quirini, Joe Thompson, Dr. Richard Nails). The competition winner was Wendy Moten from the US.
Other prize-winners were Mara Kim (Germany) and Massimo Bertacci (Italy).
There were also appearances by guest stars including Thin Lizzy, Drupy, Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger of The Doors, Kevin Costner & Modern West, Thomas Anders, Liz Mitchell, Joe Thompson, Dr Richard Nails, Woody Allen, and others.
Excursions and entertainment options for performers and guests of the Festival included sightseeing, visiting museums and country palaces, and night cruises along the River Neva and the Gulf of Finland.
The 5th White Nights of St. Petersburg International Music Festival reverberated like a brilliant chord through the Russian and
international music community. Never before has Russia seen so many top stars brought together on one stage as part of a single Festival.
We are confident that the White Nights Festival will continue to build partnerships and friendships between people from all over the world.
The 6th International Music Festival "White Nights of St. Petersburg"
On the first weekend in July, from the 6th till the 8th in St. Petersburg, was held one of the brightest and most large-scale events - the International Music Festival "White Nights of St. Petersburg!"
For three days eminent jury members, honored guests of the festival, and of course the audience were enjoying the contest of young performers from all over the world - Italy, Albania, Peru, Spain, USA, Venezuela, Bahamas, Russia and other countries, and also the performances of guest stars.
The jury members were Paula Abdul, Marty Tudor and Turbo B. The coordinator of the star jury was Dmitry Zakon.
The Festival 2012 was visited by Anastasia, Simple Minds, Paula Abdul, Michael Bolton, Spanday Balet (Tony Hadley), Mika, «Zemljane», Eros Ramazzotti, Natalie Imbruglia and many others! All celebrity guests were impressed by the scale and organizational level of the Festival, and of course, they were amazed by the beauty of St. Petersburg in summer!
The anchorwoman of the Festival was an actress Elena Sever, accompanied by TV journalist and presenter Andrey Malakhov, a young singer UrKiss, who performed with his new song, a singer Alexey Vorobyov, and also an amazing American actor and singer David Hasselhoff.
All the days of the event were highlighted by the major media of St. Petersburg and Russia, also by the journalists from Spain, Germany, Britain, USA and other countries. Furthermore, all internet users could observe what was going on online - on the official website of the festival "White Nights of St. Petersburg» www.wnfestival.ru.
It is undoubtedly that the main intrigue was carried on the distribution of prizes! The Grand Prix winner was the representative of Italy - Giovanni Fiorellino, who has extensive experience in participating in competitions. First place received Conti Tyler from the United States, who shocked the jury by simplicity of the performance and skillful vocal possession at the same time.
Second place was won by the representative of Albania Nishliu Rona, who was trying her luck for a second time after participating in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012. The third place deserves a blues-rock band from Peru - Amen, astonished the legendary Turbo B by "real music and drive". People's Choice Award stays in Russia - with a band of "Russkie". Special prize of the festival organizing committee "White Nights of St. Petersburg" earned by Turkey, by a charming singer - Felicity Kaya.
The festival is over, but it has remained in the memory of participants and spectators as the brightest music event in the one of the most beautiful cities it the world - in St. Petersburg!
